  7. BUS

So i drove a bus today for the very fist time. it was only a 15 seater but i is still classed as a bus. I’m wanting to tell everyone on Facebook but i don’t want to post it as 1. i want to surprise my family when i get my official bus license and 2. i don’t want people to  make fun of me or be rude (not that they would ) the main reason is i want as little as possible to be known until i can actually get it. its one thing to answer 10 questions on the rules of driving a bus its another to drive a 25 seater well enough to pass the test/ and continue to be able to drive one. anyway just felt like i should tell someone :-)

  12. @ these new tears

Being a youth pastor was my dream too, I can’t believe I’m actually doing the job sometimes! I got into it kind of by accident though.

My main job is a teacher and at the start of this year I started a drama school for kids. I was looking for a venue and inquired ad this church, who were very accomodating and let me use their Sunday school room. I wasn’t currently going to a church regularly having just moved to the town so I went a couple of times and really liked it. Then in January I was running a holiday program with a whole bunch of kids there, and one lunchtime the pastor came out and asked me if I’d ever wanted to get into youth ministry. Turns out they’d be praying for someone with a heart for youth for years to be a part-time youth pastor, and he’d been thinking about who he knew, looked out the window and saw me with these kids.

I said yes, it was something that had always been on my heart and he started to cry. I had to have a few meetings with the board but by March I was employed!

What I like - getting to interact and get along with the young people and be a part of their lives, making good relationships, getting the chance to teach young people about God, watch them make connections with each other and with God, getting to be there for them when they need me, getting the chance to introduce different styles of worship and church, preaching and worship leading.

What I don’t like - the pay, the lack of resources, how noncommittal teenagers are so often not many people will show up for youth group or bible study. Sometimes I resent the fact that going to church is my job, because you know those days when you just don’t feel like it? I don’t like it when sometimes the church seems to stand for things I don’t agree with - I can feel quite conflicted sometimes. I don’t like how resistant to change some people are.

The pros outweigh the cons! It is definitely a job where you always work more than you’re employed for but that’s OK when you love it and as long as no one is taking advntage of you.

My church is a church of christ. There’s about 120 people there, mostly old people and young families. It’s undergoing a period of transition at the moment as we’ve bought a block of land and are planning on putting up a bigger building. It’s relatively traditional (songs, communion, sermon every week) but it’s very welcoming and really like a big family.

My night service I’m trying things like sitting around tables instead of in rows, and incorporating lots of media like films and videos. I’m keeping my sermon to only ten-15 minutes long. Trying different things with music, extensive periods of prayer and sharing with people. Lots of experiments at the moment!

I know some people who’ve done work with YWAM, heard really great things. I’d be keen to hear more about it and what you’re doing.

    Where are you originally from?

lame about the answer box thing :-). i love how God works in wonderful ways. and takes us on an amazing journey when we let him.

where are you from originally. what type of youth do you have are they all from christian families or are they new Christians. whats something that you are really wanting to challenge them in their faith with. so you have many other people helping you? was their a youth ministry before you came, if so how have the other leaders received you if not how have u started to build your team.

what resources do you currently have access to. what would you like to have access to. i think that their will always be things that people wont agrea. the 2 questions that you need to ask yourself is what does the bible say about this and is it something that is important to focus on or can we agree to not agree.

from my experiences in church most people are resistant to change. you just take one step at a time. slow and steady wins the race.

your church sounds a lot like my church. my church has just moved onto a bigger building which is great. over the last 6 years though we have seen a big change in the people that have attended we used to have a lot of youth and young adults but a few tings happened and they all left so now we have a lot of older people and we are starting to get more young families and the youth/ young adults attendance is picking up

the night service sounds like it has a lot of potential. how is it being received. how are the prayer times run are you getting people to pray for each other or are you presenting an issue/ topic and then getting people to pray about that?.

I’m originally from a place called Toowoomba but am now living in Brisbane. im currently the kitchen manager (till the end of the month) for our campus which has between 20-120 people at a time (theirs around 70 atm) i then will be getting ready to staff a course which is 6 months long 4 of those months we have lectures on how to be a disciple of Christ. some of the topics that we cover is hearing the voice of God holy spirit character and nature of God. fear of the Lord. we then have 2 months of outreach were we send teams to different countries to serve the people over their some of the countries hat we have been to are India japan Peru Canada Germany.

my role in this course involves a lot of different things. i sit in class with the students. i mentor them and run small groups to allow them to process what they are learning. i lead one of the outreach teams. mark workbooks and assignments… the list goes on. it is in some ways quite different to being a youth pastor but i am really enjoying the experience.
